MGO Manuka Honey is a high quality honey produced from wild Manuka plants (Leptospermum scoparium) that grow in pristine, remote areas of New Zealand. Due to its exceptionally high content of the natural substance methylglyoxal (MGO), Manuka Honey has become the most famous honey in the world, often referred to as the ‘King of Honeys’.

MGO Rating System
Around 1990, Professor Peter Molan of Waikato University discovered that Manuka Honey has a stable antibacterial effect. But it was not until 15 years later that Professor Henle of the Technical University of Dresden discovered the active ingredient methylglyoxal (MGO). Kerry Paul, Chief Executive of Cosana New Zealand, worked with Professor Henle’s team to make the scientific discovery public. Kerry Paul is the pioneer of the MGO Manuka Honey Rating System, which is used by the New Zealand Manuka Honey Industry to sort honey by its antibacterial activity.
